 What Is Star Anise?

Star anise is the dried, star-shaped pericarps and seed pods of the Chinese star anise plant , an evergreen tree native to Vietnam and Southwest China. It contains anethole, which is also found in fennel seeds, anise seed, and magnolia; it gives star anise a similar licorice taste. Star anise is famed not only for its distinct flavor and culinary applications but also for its medicinal benefits.

How to Use Star Anise

Star anise has just as wide a variety of uses and is a staple spice in lots of Chinese cuisines.

It's the main ingredient in what is known in the U.S. as Chinese five-spice powder, as well as the spice blend garam masala.

It's used to flavor teas and liqueurs like pastis, sambuca, and absinthe.

Its licorice-like flavor makes it popular to use in pastry recipes and other baked goods.

Star anise is also used in more savory dishes and soups like pho broth and Indian cuisine dishes like biryani.

Easy to Incorporate Into Your Cooking

Star anise is steeped in water to make a tea used to treat respiratory infections,

nausea, constipation and other digestive issues.

Star anise also makes a great addition to sweet dishes and desserts,

such as baked fruit, pies, quick bread and muffins.

Star anise has a distinct licorice-like flavor. It’s a popular ingredient in Asian cuisine

and can be used in soups, stews, broths, baked goods, desserts or steeped as a tea. It pairs well with cinnamon, coriander, cardamom and clove.

Storage

Store both whole or ground spice in an air-tight container away from moisture,

heat, and sunlight. Whole star anise will remain fresh and vibrantly flavored for about one year.

When using star anise in cooking, it's important to note that a little goes a long way due to its potent flavor.
